Safety is Our Top Priority

Leaving damaged shingles unattended could affect the life of your roof. It is important to regularly check your roof for damaged shingles and ensure that they are replaced as soon as possible. Fixing Damaged Roof Shingles is essential in any roof maintenance.

The roof keeps your house and your family warm and dry. It is one of the best investments you will make toward the value of your home. If you are comfortable working on your roof, you may decide to take on the job to replace the damaged shingles yourself. The best way to determine if this is a job you could handle or need to contact a roofing company.

 Assess the damage first
  • Find the damaged area of shingles and assess how much need to be changed.  Check the corners of the shingles if they are curled up and pulled away from the roof, then they need to be changed
  • Check also for moisture barrier damage, flashing seal and for signs of water seepage
  • Check the surrounding shingles also and if you detect that the surrounding shingles are not protecting against moisture, then you will need to replace all the shingles in the square
  • Split shingles are repairable without removing them once you have determined that they are still good condition

You have assessed the damage and determined that it is a job you could handle on own.

Helpful tips to guide you through replacing your damaged shingles:
  • It is recommended that you tackle the job in cool weather as asphalt and asphalt sealant will heat up under warm weather condition. Shingles are easier to remove when cool as it is brittle and not moldable.  We suggest you remove the shingles first thing in the morning when the weather is cool.
  • If you must work in the heat, then wet the shingles to cool them down before removal.
  • Use a small tool to pry the shingles. A pry-bar, the claw of a hammer or a crow-bar will work perfectly.
  • Loosen the exposed nails with any of the tools mentions above.  Special care need to be taken with this as you want to prevent breaking or cracking any of the undamaged shingles.
  • Continue loosening and removing the damaged shingles. If shingles are badly damaged, there is no point in salvaging them.
  • Once the nails are removed, loosen and slide the damaged shingles downwards and out.
  • Gather all the tools and materials together so they are easily accessible as you start the job: purchase extra shingles, you will need shingle cement or adhesive, roofing nails.
  • Place a new shingle in the same position as the one you removed.  Make sure you follow all the directions for the type of shingles you purchased.
  • Take the time to look around the surrounding shingles and ensure that you reattach them when you are finished repairing the damaged ones.
  • Walk around and secure other loose shingles while you are at it.
  • Split or cracked shingles could be repaired rather than replacing them.

If your roof is more than 20 years old, then most of the shingles are damaged and worn out.

Unfortunately, if your roof fits the above, then replacement is the only option and is not a project you want to handle on your own. A job of this magnitude, requires a Roofing Contractor.
